back in the halcyon days of 1996, the mighty roy and i watched a lot
of MTV. in our defense, beavis and butthead were still on the
air, and if we weren't already drunk we were well on our way. and
there were videos to wait for - to wait patiently at first, and then
not so patiently, as we feared they had been featured in the rotation
just before we turned on the television.
i was watching in the hopes of catching a glimpse of gwen stefani and
no doubt singing "spiderwebs" - for the record because of her bare,
gyrating midriff and super cool plaid pants, but also because i
actually liked the song. roy was waiting for nada surf, and their
hit "popular." i still contend - when i so infrequently discuss
these things - that i was the fan of the better song, but roy liked the
better video.
i bring this up because pitchfork's limey competitor - stylus magazine - has responded to the chicago indie rockers' throwing down of the gauntlet with a list of videos of their own. and unlike pitchfork, they
have the stones to rank 'em. they've been offering up twenty
videos a day all week, and tommorow they'll cap it off with the final
score, so to speak. but those last twenty are gonna have to be
pretty damn good to top the group of 60-41 as a whole, so i'm gonna
send you there.
oh, and "popular" checks in at #49. the ranking is too low, but i'd be highly surprised to find no doubt in the top twenty tomorrow.
