Today is a big day. We turn three years old today. We've come a long way since our humble beginnings, and have much to commemorate. It's a less-than-ideal day for festivities, given our other plans, but birthdays are meant to be observed on the day the of. We'll make no exceptions for ourselves. So without further ado, here's the latest installment of our annual look back at the year that was:
- Our one and only (and ill-advised) reader poll led to a disastrous week of nothing but internet memes.
- There was a minor security breach when Jodi hacked our site and offerered her confessional.
- Our trip to the Outer Banks culminated with the awarding of the 2008 Beachies.
- We had a busy weekend.
- Cap'n Crunch failed in his attempt to make a mockery of Rocktober.
- We discussed wrasslin' scenarios, and other things lit'rary.
- We were part of this delicious breakfast.
- A cool Christmas present made us feel highly uncool.
- The Steelers won the Super Bowl....
- ....and we won Karaoke to the Death.
- M-----l posted about facial hair and an argument ensued.
- Hellooooooo, new bike!
- We spent a lot of time making maps and riding our new bike.
Which brings us full-circle to this morning.... Sorry to bail on our own party, but we really do have to go. Next year, we will host a proper celebration.
Today marks the second anniversary of our little corner of the Voxosphere, and it's been another busy year for hotrod.vox.com. Aside from finally growing up and adding capital letters to our arsenal of prose, we've welcomed some new faces and we've seen some others gradually drift away. Our sisters joined us for a bit, blowing in on a whirlwind of comments and departing almost as abruptly. An old friend from high school randomly found us - little old us - out of all the many Vox pages from which to choose. That may have a little something to do with the good people at Six Apart finally recognizing the sharp social commentary our organization offers on a semi-regular basis (i.e. when we feel like blogging). Sharp social commentary like:
- Our thoughts about the long-awaited big screen treatment of our life story.
- Our feud with Guitar Hero (and our subsequent reconciliation).
- Our report on our summer vacation.
- Our unwavering dedication to the rock and roll.
- Our initial foray into the live-blog paradigm.
- Our pearls of wisdom in our "Rules for Life" series.
- Our continuing exploration of the questions that haunt men's souls.
- And our faithful documentation of occasions when DC area Voxers get together....
- ....such as at the newly revitalized Karaoke to the Death.
But it hasn't been all serious reporting for the past year. There's been some time for fun and games. There were a whole bunch of challenges from various members of the 'hood, and we won them all. The only challenge we didn't win was our own. (And - frankly - we failed miserably.) But despite our sterling record, we think we will have to put the challenges behind us for the coming year. Our latest ended badly with a breach of contract on the part of the loser after our victory. The whole episode has soured us on the enterprise; it's just not the same any more. Consider this the announcement of our retirement, undefeated, immediately upon the conclusion of our "yoga is easy challenge" at the end of this calendar year.
Even without the occasional challenge, though, we are looking forward to year three of hotrod.vox.com. We don't have children of our own, but we have nieces and (now plural) nephews. That third year is when they really start to become fun. No more poopy pants here! We're big kids now!!
If anyone needs any more evidence that our little corner of the Voxosphere is the best (and we are using "our" in that phrase to refer to all of us, not in that "royal we" schtick we sometimes employ), one needs to look no further than the latest post from Team Vox. Scroll down and yinz'll see listed the top ten most commented upon posts of the past year. Our (again, all of us) pitiful little band is represented no less than four times. We're so very proud of everybody that we're not even jealous that none of those posts originated on these pages. Well, okay.... We're a little jealous. And by "a little," we mean of course, "exceedingly."

like so many others, we here at hotrod.vox.com were a vox beta tester. we were, in fact, a beta tester as of one year ago today. yndar invited dabysan who invited us, which we guess makes us george clooney to vox's kevin bacon. we've come a long way in the three hundred and sixty-four days since our first post, and we owe it all to you - the patient reader we never expected. to honor this momentous occasion, we would like first to celebrate those offerings from our core neighborhood which have offered us the most admiration and/or amusement.
we didn't know what to expect when we began this experiment, but we have had more fun than we can possibly express. we owe it all to you; we have the best neighborhood imaginable.
- jodi says it out loud. good luck, jodi - we'll buy it in hardback, whatever it is.
- calaverde discovers "south park" and the painful innocence of butters.
- the good doctor loves puppies.
- curlysalamander visits new zealand. we are insanely jealous.
- akaijen asks how it all began.
- michellemybelle talks about christmas vacation. and ice cream sandwiches.
- the grumblebunny shares the MOBA website.
- soo eats some breadsticks.
- el-crunch-e-tan attempts - unsuccessfully - to defend himself.
- emma reviews the wuss-rock of belle and sebastian.
- vanna discusses chappy's dad. and to a lesser extent: their cats, and kttd.
- and, finally, dabysan admits that we have been right all along.
and because we suppose that this retrospective wouldn't be complete without a little navel-gazing, following are the five favorite posts of our own of the year which just ended. a top-five list is tough, indeed - and these are presented only in reverse chronological order.
- scandal rocked the insular world of karaoke to the death.
- comments on a simple caricature exercise shocked and horrified sister #2.
- and who can forget when the grumblebunny joined our pitiful little band?
- we offered a much needed apology to our bike.
- we reminisced about terrible concerts we have seen.
