philippides had the right idea
In a little over a month, I'll be riding my bike around Lake Tahoe. I've done this before. This will be my fifth trip around the lake and my tenth century ride overall. And since I got a sweet new bike just a few months ago, I figured this would be a good time to try something new. So today I signed up for the Marine Corps Marathon.
I used to be a runner. I ran cross-country in high school (sort of) and ran regularly through college until I decided it would be cooler to start smoking. But though I (mostly) quit smoking in 2002, it's still been about fifteen years since I've done any serious running. Those who remember the self-loathing emails I sent about the training for my first century have an idea what's in store over the next few months. This should be fun.
It's fair to say I'm a little nervous about this endeavor, which is why I've told just about everyone I can think of. I figure the more people who know, the more I will be shamed into actually following through. Also - as I've said before - what appeals to me most about the Team In Training program as opposed to other charitable organizations with which I might become involved is that it's supposed to be difficult. That's the whole point. But that doesn't mean I can't bitch and moan about how shitty I feel. Which.... I am sure I will.
